Xalapa is a nice place to be based, but we also hoped to take a couple of trips to other parts of Mexico while we are here. We looked into buses to Oaxaca. They take quite a long time and were actually fairly booked up at the weekends. We didn’t feel like taking 2 flights and connecting in Mexico City, so looked into where we could fly directly from Veracruz. Cancun won the draw because it would mean that we could see Chichen Itza and also get our first ever glimpse of the Caribbean. This was particularly tempting as we planned the trip on a freezing, drizzly Xalapa evening at the end of a week of particularly bad weather.
I booked the flights with Travelocity and from a few dollars more each per night, we could include a hotel! Brilliant. I spent a few hours looking at some of the major all inclusive deals which would be just a couple of hundred dollars more each, but in the end we opted for a simple place. Unless it was a really high-end place like the Banyan Tree, it could be a mistake to rely on offerings in the hotel. There were some pretty scathing reports on Trip Advisor that put us off. We avoided Cancun itself as it has such a bad reputation for being the playground for underage drinkers at “Spring Break” (yes, it’s spring break right now). We opted for the (apparently) more upmarket resort of Playa del Carmen down the road and a cheap hotel with a beach club called El Tukan.
